Session 1. UX Fundamentals - Jen Romano Bergstrom
Learn proven usability principles and design patterns that consistently produce the best user experiences. Get practical advice about how to present information, and learn what changes to your designs could have the most impact.
Jennifer Romano Bergstrom leads the user experience research efforts at Fors Marsh Group and designs protocols for qualitative and quantitative research efforts. She frequently collects physiological data, such as eye tracking, pupil dilation, and electrodermal activity, when conducting UX studies and is co-editor of Eye Tracking in User Experience Design (forthcoming, fall 2013). Many of her studies aim to improve user experience testing methods. She designs and tests surveys, teaches usability courses, presents at conferences, and publishes in peer-reviewed journals. Jennifer holds a Ph.D. in Applied/Experimental Psychology from The Catholic University of America and is the President of UXPA DC.
Session 2: UX Strategy and LeanUX - John Whalen
How do cutting-edge startups and multinationals rapidly design products and apps that meet user needs and business objectives? Find out in this brief tour of the LeanUX methodology. Learn how to create a winning strategy and design concept through strategy workshops and design studios. You will learn how UX is at the heart of hot concepts such as LeanUX, Design Thinking and Agile Development.
John Whalen leads Brilliant Experience – a consultancy using LeanUX, Agile and Design Thinking methodologies to provide UX insights, strategy and ideation to create brilliant experiences for startups and Fortune 500 clients. He specializes in understanding the audience perspective and finding the ideal balance between user experience, business needs and technological possibility. John has experience (and great stories to tell from) working with clients in the financial, healthcare, ecommerce and government verticals. He is studying the how mobile devices are changing our everyday behaviors. John holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from Johns Hopkins University and is the VP of UXPA DC.

Learn how thinking from your users' perspectives can make your products dramatically more useful by making sure content can be found. Learn the core principles of search engine optimization (SEO) and how SEO and user-centered design can create great experiences.
Andrew Stevens is the Web Services Librarian at George Mason University. He has a B.A in creative writing from Ohio University, as well as a Master's in Information Science and a Sp.L.I.S from Indiana University. Over the years, he has worked in and gained experience in multiple aspects of Web/New Media production, having worked as a usability specialist, a project manager, a designer, and a programmer. Andrew has participated in a number of professional organizations, including ASIS&T, ACM/SIGCHI, The Web Standards Project, and UXPA.
Session 4: Hands-On Usability Testing - Jon Rubin
Learn how rapid, low-cost testing can provide major design improvements. Get practical, hands-on training on how to design, conduct and analyze usability tests to give you insights into how to continually improve your products. We'll test designs and get feedback right in this session!
Jonathan Rubin believes that a little usability can make government work a lot better. He is program manager for the First Fridays Usability Program at the U.S. General Services Administration. He leads a team of experienced and budding user experience professionals in improving Federal services, including desktop sites, mobile sites and apps, prototypes and APIs. He has helped dozens of government agencies improve their user experience, including the U.S. Army, IRS, U.S. Census and NASA. Jonathan specializes in desktop and mobile usability testing, group facilitation, customer interviews and creating agile usability testing teams. He loves presenting about user experience and training people to conduct their own usability testing. He is the Secretary of the DC chapter of the User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA DC) and is certified as a "Usability Analyst" ( CUA ) through Human Factors International. He has a master's in journalism from Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism and a B.A. in English from the University of Rhode Island.
