UXPA DC - World Usability Day Event

World Usability Day ( is an annual event hosted by over 25 countries. It brings together professionals from different backgrounds for a common goal: to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use.

2015 is the Ten Year Anniversary for World Usability Day and this year's theme is Innovation. Innovation takes on many different forms - ranging from disruptive to radical to incremental. It takes good design research to transform an innovative idea into something that adds real value to users’ lives.

We are celebrating World Usability Day 2015 by hosting a series of lightning talks about how innovative research has helped solve critical user needs.

Digital Sketching with Remote Users, Clients, and Peers


With increasing numbers of your team, clients, and users working remotely, what's the equivalent of a natural whiteboard session where you crowd into a room to sketch over marker fumes? We have tools for specific interactions like observed usability tests, card sorts, and video conferencing, but they don't allow the flexibility of sketching, pointing, commenting, and laughing together. I've been bending my tools to fill this gap, to facilitate natural, human, creative interactions. I'd like to share at least one, to help you delight those you collaborate with online.

Simulating healthcare contexts of use for usability testing medical devices


This talk will illustrate a variety of innovative ways in which our clients are simulating healthcare contexts of use in developing their medical device products. My colleagues and I have used these simulations in usability testing medical devices. The approaches include implanting devices in pork loin to simulate human muscle tissue, wound models for testing negative pressure wound treatment, a mannequin for simulating drug injection systems, and mock-ups for working with blood glucose meters.
